PATTERNED INEQUALITY, COMPOUNDING INJUSTICE, AND ALGORITHMIC PREDICTION

چکیده
If whatever counts as merit for some purpose is unevenly distributed, a decision procedure that accurately sorts people on basis will “pick up” and reproduce the pre-existing pattern in ways more random, less merit-tracking procedures would not. This dynamic an important cause concern about use of predictive models to allocate goods opportunities. In this article, I distinguish two different objections give voice ways. First, may contribute future social injustice other ills by sustaining or aggravating patterns undermine equality status opportunity. Second, same wrong particular individuals compounding prior injustices explain those persons’ predicted actual characteristics. argue importance first idea raise doubts second. normative assessments legal regulation algorithmic decisionmaking, our thinking anti-discrimination norms broadly, central ought be prospect entrenching harmful unjust patterns—quite apart from any personal done whom predictions are made.

متن کاملAlgorithmic Statistics, Prediction and Machine Learning
Algorithmic statistics considers the following problem: given a binary string x (e.g., some experimental data), find a “good” explanation of this data. It uses algorithmic information theory to define formally what is a good explanation. In this paper we extend this framework in two directions. First, the explanations are not only interesting in themselves but also used for prediction: we want ...
متن کاملAlgorithmic Extensions of Cheeger's Inequality to Higher Eigenvalues and Partitions
We consider two generalizations of the problem of finding a sparsest cut in a graph. The first is to find a partition of the vertex set into m parts so as to minimize the sparsity of the partition (defined as the ratio of the weight of edges between parts to the total weight of edges incident to the smallest m − 1 parts). The second, that has appeared in the context of understanding the unique ...
متن کاملNational Patterns in Environmental Injustice and Inequality: Outdoor NO2 Air Pollution in the United States
We describe spatial patterns in environmental injustice and inequality for residential outdoor nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations in the contiguous United States. Our approach employs Census demographic data and a recently published high-resolution dataset of outdoor NO2 concentrations. Nationally, population-weighted mean NO2 concentrations are 4.6 ppb (38%, p<0.01) higher for nonwhites tha...
متن کاملEpistemic Injustice and Illness
This article analyses the phenomenon of epistemic injustice within contemporary healthcare. We begin by detailing the persistent complaints patients make about their testimonial frustration and hermeneutical marginalization, and the negative impact this has on their care. We offer an epistemic analysis of this problem using Miranda Fricker's account of epistemic injustice. We detail two types o...
